CATIM,
Centro de Apoio Tecnológico à Industria Metalomecânica
(Technical Centre to Support the Metal Mechanic Industry) is the Portuguese
Technological center for the Metalworking Industry, a private non-profit
organization created under Decree No. 249/86 devoted to support and
promote the technological development in the companies of the metalworking
sector. Presently CATIM has more than 450 associates and 1500 clients.
CATIM's main activities are related to Quality management, Normalization,
Machinery safety, Health and safety, Environment, Metrology, Materials
and Products testing, and also training.
The head-office is located at Porto. In 1993, a Technological Unit of
CATIM was created in Lisbon where the coating engineering (plasma, HVOF,
Oxi-fuel and PVD) and corrosion tests are carried out. This Unit originated
a new division, CATIMEDICAL, devoted entirely to coatings for medical
implants.
The
metrology, materials and product testing laboratories are accredited.
CATIMEDICAL is ISO 9002 certified for coatings of medical implants.
CATIM is a European Notified Body regarding the Machinery, Gas Appliances,
Low Voltage, Pressure equipment and Toys European directives.
CATIM's training abilities are also recognized by INOFOR (National Institute
for accreditation of training activities).
CATIM
was nominated as the technical coordinator for the implementation of
a National Environmental Project signed by the Metalworking Companies
Association (AIMMAP) and the Ministry of Economy that ended in September
of 2000. As a result of such agreement 100 companies implemented technical
and management solutions that allowed them to adapt to environmental
legislation.
CATIM coordinated in the North region of Portugal the RECYCLE project,
an environmental project that promoted the technology transfer between
regions in France (Rhône-Alpes), Spain (Valencia) and Portugal.
The project allowed the transfer of Wastewater recycling technologies
and other solutions to prevent/reduce the contamination resulting from
the industrial activities of the metalworking sector to the Portuguese
and Spanish Regions.
Now,
CATIM is the regional coordinator of the ENVIREDOX project, and will
be the main pole of technical/technological assistance (including training),
to the companies of the North Region.
